Bookish Countdown: Join Me On An Exciting Journey To Look At The Top 5 Books On My TBR In 2024

Lately, I have been having issues accomplishing my reading goals. For the past several years, I have maybe gotten through one or two books before something else takes away my attention, and months go by before I realize I haven’t read anything. At this point, My TBR is taller than I am, and, for reference, I am roughly 6 feet tall. I recently went through my virtual library and picked out five books I am most excited to read in 2024.

1) The London Seance Society by Sarah Penner

Summary: In 1873 Paris, Vaudeline D’Allire is channeling the spirits of murder victims to help solve the crime. In present-day Paris, Lenna Wickens is searching for answers to her sister’s death.

Why I’m excited: I am looking forward to this one because I love The Lost Apothecary. I love how Sarah combines what happened in the past with what is currently going on in the present in a way that leaves me wanting to keep turning pages. I am hoping that this book provides the same feeling.

2) Thistlefoot by Genna Rose Neathercott

Summary: After years of estrangement, the Yaga siblings are about to receive a strange inheritance. To their dismay, it wasn’t money, but a house on chicken legs and a sinister figure that came with it. Ultimately, time, magic, and legacy must collide–erupting in a powerful conflagration to determine who gets to remember the past and craft a new future.

Why I’m excited: I love traditional fairytales and their spin-offs. I especially love fairytales I haven’t heard of before. Feathers of Snow by Alice Ivinya was a great Goose Girl retelling. I am hoping I find the same intrigue in this book.

3) The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer

Summary: Lucy knows what it is like growing up without a family. When she meets Christopher while teaching, she wants nothing more than to adopt him and give him the family she never had. When her favorite author holds a contest, she enters, hoping to win to give herself and Christopher everything they ever wanted.

Why I’m excited: This seems like a cross between Ready Player One and Sedendum—two books I completely adore. I love books that involve quests and contests. This one seems to have a little bit of both.

4) Beautiful Little Fools by Jillian Cantor

Summary: On a sultry August day in 1922, Jay Gatsby is shot dead in his swimming pool. To the police, it appears to be an open-and-shut case of murder/suicide when the body of George Wilson, a local mechanic, is found in the woods nearby. Then, a diamond hairpin is discovered in the bushes by the pool, and three women fall under suspicion. Each holds a key that can unlock the truth to this enigmatic millionaire’s mysterious life and death.

Why I’m excited: The only thing I love more than historical fiction is historical fiction with strong female leads. This book seems to have three of them. I can’t wait to dive into the glitz and glam of the roaring ‘20s.

5) The Unfortunate Side Effects of Heartbreak and Magic by Breanne Randall

Summary: Sadie Revelare has always believed that the curse of four heartbreaks that accompanies her magic would be worth the price. But when her grandmother is diagnosed with cancer with only weeks to live and her first heartbreak, Jake McNealy, returns, her carefully structured life begins to unravel. Their grandmother has been the backbone of the family for generations, and with her death, Sadie isn’t sure she’ll have the strength to keep the family and her magic together.

Why I’m excited: Magic is one of my favorite things ever. I love reading about new ways magic could be given or taken. That is why I loved Spellbreaker’s new take on magic so much. I am hoping the connection to heartbreak gives me the same feeling. I am ready to be all up in my feels.

Should I read these five first? Or split them up throughout the year to keep motivation up?
